Modern Art for Beginners

The term 'Modern Art' is one that has been heatedly debated. The exact time period that encompasses modern art is not something that can be clearly defined. It would seem that there were pioneers in the field of modern art as far back as the mid-1800s, or perhaps even further. It is an art form that seems to have developed over a hundred years. Perhaps it does not matter that much when it started. What matters is that modern art has its own unique identity, along with a shock value that separates it from other art forms.

Much of modern art has an abstract quality to it. What doesn't have an abstract quality goes against past ideas of 'traditional' or 'acceptable' artwork. Many, many artists have contributed to the modern art movement, some of the first being impressionists and post-impressionists.

Some of the best-known impressionists are Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, and Alfred Sisley. They had many well-known compatriots, but when people think of Impressionism, the work of these men usually comes to mind. The impressionists used vivid brush strokes, and put great emphasis on light and movement in their paintings. The work was supposed to capture a moment, and make it seem lifelike.
Post- Impressionism was similar to Impressionism, except that it threw away some of the limitations Impressionism still held. They often would distort forms for effect, use geometric shapes, and to use unusual colors. One of the most famous Post-Impressionists must be Vincent Van Gogh.

Expressionism is when an artist distorts reality for an emotional effect, often angst. Expressionism, unlike Impressionism and some other common types of art, is exhibited in many art forms, including painting, film, theatre, and music. It is mostly a twentieth century form of art, but the forefathers of it were such individuals as Edvard Munch, who is most famous for 'The Scream.'

There are many other famous styles of art that have flourished in the 19th century and since. Cubism is showcased best by Pablo Picasso, but also used in architecture and literature. Symbolism in art and literature captured the darker, more 'gritty' side of life.

Some of the very recent artistic wonders almost cannot be defined. So many styles of art seem to overlap to some degree, and many individual artists seem to take two or more styles and blend them, turning them into something all their own. A couple good examples of very new art are Mark Rothko and Tracy Emin. They are called Young British Artists or YBAs. Mark Rothco's paintings have been called 'iconic,' and are rectangles of varying shapes and sizes painted in a myriad of colors. Tracy Emin has incorporated a lot of sewing into her art. She even showcases her beds, rumpled covers and all.

Modern art is a vibrant thing that is difficult to put parameters around. There are so many aspects and nuances to the works that are considered 'modern' that occasionally it seems futile to try to explain it. What is for certain is that modern art has brought us from a period when a lot of art looked the same, and there were exacting rules put on art, to a period where art is boundless and completely unrestrained.

Caring for Your Canvas Stretcher

Canvas stretchers may be homemade or purchase, but either way, they require special care. Canvas stretching bars are not easy to build, and if you decide to purchase them, there are only limited kinds of them available. If you want to keep the quality of your oil painting intact, be sure that you also maintain your canvas stretch in perfect condition.

Care, Maintenance, and Storage Tips for Your Canvas Stretchers

Ask for help.
Stretching a canvas is not easy and it still won't be easy even if use a canvas stretcher. Thus, it's always better to have someone around to help you as this will make the chances of an accident occurring, one that could even damage your stretcher, less likely.

Canvas stretchers, especially those custom-made to accommodate larger-sized paintings, are heavy. Again, it's better to have someone with you when you need to carry it from one place or another and when you're in the process of assembling or disassembling it.

Store canvas stretchers with care.
Naturally, it's best to store canvas stretchers away from the reach of children and in room condition. Try encasing it in safe covering, especially its corners as they have a significant impact on how your canvas will turn out after stretching. Having someone accidentally cause them to topple down is unacceptable because this could create uneven surfaces or edges which will also affect the quality of your finished product.

Wipe with non-abrasive cloth.
Do not use brushes or wet, abrasive fabrics when cleaning your canvas stretcher. Use dry and non-abrasive cloth instead and be sure to wipe every part clean at least every other day. This way, dust will not accumulate and you won't be consequently required to use water for cleaning your stretcher.

If, in the event, you feel the need of cleaning your canvas stretcher with water be sure to have it dried completely before using it to stretch a canvas.

Be careful when using electricity.
A few canvas stretchers do make the use of electricity. If yours does, be sure to follow proper instructions to avoid accidentally causing damage either to the canvas or the stretcher itself.

Provide clear and detailed instructions and other users.
If you're allowing other people to make use of your canvas stretcher, be sure to provide them with a list of clear and detailed instructions. It's better to be safe than sorry!

Consult a professional.
Lastly, if you do notice something wrong with your canvas stretcher, ask a professional for help instead of conducting your own trial-by-error experiment and which could turn out damaging in the end.

Paintings in Stone

MOSAIC has been called a bizarre art-form, a striking ornamentation technique, and one of the most durable forms of decorative art to have survived from antiquity. Fifteenth-century Italian artist Domenico Ghirlandajo called it the true way of painting for eternity. Whatever you think of mosaics, they have a truly fascinating history.

Mosaic may be defined as the art of embellishing a surface--such as a floor, a wall, or a vault--with designs made of small, closely set pieces of stone, glass, or tile. From ancient times, mosaics have been used to adorn floors and walls. Mosaics have also decorated baths, pools, and fountains--places where humidity would have damaged more delicate art forms.

Mosaics can vary greatly in appearance, ranging from simple monochrome floors to black and white designs and from complex polychrome floral patterns to ambitious pictorial compositions.

Invention and Development

It is not clear who invented mosaics. Ancient Egyptians and Sumerians adorned their buildings with colored surface-patterns. However, the art seems to have died out without further development. Asia Minor, Carthage, Crete, Greece, Sicily, Spain, and Syria have all been credited with being the birthplace of mosaic, leading one writer to theorize that the technique was invented, forgotten, and invented again at different times and in several places of the Mediterranean basin.

Early mosaics, some as old as the ninth centuryB.C.E., were made of smooth pebbles arranged in simple patterns. Local stones provided the range of colors. The stones usually measured one half to three quarters of an inch [10 to 20mm] in diameter, but some detailed sections used pebbles as small as a mere one quarter of an inch [5mm]. By the fourth centuryB.C.E., artisans began cutting pebbles into smaller pieces, permitting greater precision. Stone cubes, or tesserae, gradually superseded pebbles. Tesserae offered a greater range of tints and were more easily laid and adapted to the required design. They produced even surfaces, which could be ground and waxed to enhance the brilliance of their colors. By the second centuryC.E., extensive use was also being made of small pieces of colored glass, which greatly enriched the mosaicist's palette.

The Hellenistic period (c. 300B.C.E. to c. 30B.C.E.) produced particularly fine pictorial mosaics. By employing the widest possible range of colours and by reducing the size of the tesserae to one cubic millimetre..., the works executed by Greek mosaicists came to vie with wall painting, says the book Glossario tecnico-storico del mosaico (Technical-Historical Glossary of Mosaic Art). Color was skillfully used to obtain subtle illusions of light, shade, depth, volume, and perspective.

Typical of Greek works is the highly refined central inset, or emblema--often a virtuoso reproduction of a famous painting--surrounded by ornate borders. Some insets have tesserae so tiny and well-fitting that they seem to have been created with brush strokes rather than with individual pieces of stone.

Roman Mosaics

Mosaic is often considered to be a Roman art because of the wealth of mosaics found in Italy and provinces of the Roman Empire. Pavements of this type have been found by the hundred thousand in buildings of the Roman period from northern Britain to Libya, from the Atlantic coast to the Syrian desert, says one source. They are sometimes regarded as one of the identifying features of Roman presence in an area, so closely is the peculiar technique associated with the spread of Roman culture.

However, multicolored pictorial mosaics proved ill-suited to the needs of the early empire. Great urban growth during the first centuryC.E. led to increased demand for quicker and cheaper mosaic work. This spurred on the introduction of mosaics that used only black and white tesserae. Production boomed, and according to the Enciclopedia dell'arte antica (Encyclopedia of Ancient Art), there was not a well-to-do house in any city of the empire without a m[osaic].

Exact replicas of certain designs can be found in widely separated locations. This suggests that teams of artisans--or perhaps books containing mosaic patterns--traveled from one building site to another. If desired, a studio-produced emblema could be ordered in advance, fabricated, transported to the construction site on a marble or terra-cotta tray, and then installed. All other mosaic work was done on site.

Careful planning was needed to fit designs and borders into their setting. Attention was paid to the foundation and its surface to make sure it was smooth and level. Then a thin layer of fine mortar (called the setting bed) was spread over an area small enough to be worked before it dried--perhaps less than a square yard. A sketch might be scored onto the surface as a guide. The tesserae were cut to size, and the artisan began laying them in place.

One by one, tesserae were pressed into the mortar, which squeezed up between the pieces. Once an area was covered, a setting bed would be laid in a successive area, and then another, and so on. Master craftsmen worked on the more complex sections, leaving their assistants to fill in some of the plainer areas.

The Mosaics of Christendom

In the fourth centuryC.E., mosaics began to be used in Christendom's churches. Often depicting Bible stories, such mosaics served to instruct worshipers. Flickering lights reflected on gold and colored-glass tesserae created an aura of mysticism. Says Storia dell'arte italiana (The History of Italian Art): Mosaic art was in perfect harmony with the ideology of the time, which was greatly influenced by ... Neoplatonism. In mosaic art there took place a process by means of which matter loses its dullness and is transformed into pure spirituality, pure light and pure space. What a radical departure from the simple form of worship taught by Christianity's founder--Jesus Christ!--John 4:21-24.

Byzantine churches contain some outstanding examples of mosaic work. In some houses of worship, tesserae cover almost every inch of the interior walls and vaults. What are described as masterpieces of Christian mosaic can be seen in Ravenna, Italy, where gold backgrounds dominate, portraying divine light and mystic inaccessibility.

Mosaic continued to be used prominently in Western European churches throughout the Middle Ages and was masterfully used in the Islamic world. In Renaissance Italy, workshops attached to great cathedrals, such as St.Mark's in Venice and St.Peter's in Rome, became production centers for mosaics. In about 1775, artisans in Rome learned how to cut molten glass threads of every shade imaginable into tiny tesserae, making it possible to execute miniature mosaic reproductions of paintings.

How to Buy a Good Quality Handmade Canvas?

If you are fond of art and would like to create your own, surely you wouldn't scrimp on your essentials? You would want the best paints, the best plaster, and the best materials in order to express yourself and bring out the artist in you. Getting a handmade canvas is only one step to painting better, but you would like to get the best quality canvas in order to make your work shine.

Before buying a good quality handmade canvas, however, there are things that you should look out for. First, make sure that the wood that surrounds your canvas, or the frame, is made of high quality hardwood or softwood. Low quality wood can easily fracture when you transport the canvas, and it should be able to resist possible damage that water, humidity, and dry air can bring. This wood, moreover, should be at least five centimeters, or nearly two inches deep. If the wood is too thin, your frame can make your canvas appear cheap, and you will look like you have a mounting board, not a frame.

Thin plastic canvas, or imitation fabric, can ruin your work. Look for an actual cotton canvas when looking for good quality handmade canvas. Moreover, make sure that your canvas has been hand stretched. This will ensure that the pressure is distributed evenly over the board, and that you won't have a hard time using the canvas because of differences in how the fabric feels to your touch.

Your canvas should be stapled into your frame and not simply tacked into it. Staples strengthen the hold of your canvas onto the frame. Mere tacks can tear up your fabric and can make it easy to remove from the frame. You should also check the strength of your canvas: your frame should be rigid and stable, not bendable and easy to fracture!

Lastly, if you are going to prime your canvas, then look for one that has a Gesso application. The Gesso application is a primer that makes your canvas ready for painting with acrylics, oils, and other thick paint formulations. If your canvas is simply primed with white paint, then you will have a hard time applying your paints and even mixing colors on the canvas itself.

These are only a few tips that you should take into account as you search for the perfect handmade canvas for your needs. Make sure that you do not fall into traps, such as bulk discounts on poorly made canvases, or on-sale canvases that are old and cheaply constructed. If you invest in a well-built handmade canvas, you can be sure to have art that will look good and last a long time.

Should I Be Concerned About Devil Face Painting?

Some parents may feel confused or apprehensive when their little cherub asks to be face painted as a devil. For some of us, we start to wonder if our child has some evil propensity that will rear its ugly head once he reaches adolescence. Imagine... if all the cats in the neighbourhood go missing or the next door neighbors dogs tail mysteriously gets spray painted bright blue. The whole community is baffled and you break out in a cold sweat as you realise that the only access to the neighbors backyard is via your adjoining gate.

But fear not. Children totally understand role play and make believe. Most children love to "dress up" or be face painted so they can get "into character". Most children innately understand that this means they can go to that special place of make believe and have fun, let loose and explore some parallel world that does not really exist. Let's face it... it is fun to pretend to be something you are not.

So parents, if your bundle of joy announces he or she wants devil face painting, there is no need to rush him off to the local priest for an exorcism. It's all part of being a kid and just having some fun. If you still feel uncomfortable about it, then why not get devil face painting yourself, just to reassure yourself that you are not going to instantly grow horns and start spewing green slime from your mouth. Maybe this could open up a whole new area of your relationship with your child and share in the excitement that is "make believe". But words of caution... you may just have some fun!

April Brings Opportunities for Aspiring Artists on Sanibel

Temperatures on Sanibel Island in April are just about perfect.

It is warm, sunny and bugless, with little rain and no real storms. In fact, April has the least amount of rain of all 12 months of the year with an average of only 1.1 inches.

As point of comparison, August has 9.7 inches. (but keep in mind most of the rain in Sanibel in summer comes late afternoon and through the evening, days are generally hot and sunny!)

In addition, in April the Gulf is warming up, the crowds are leaving.

Air prices are coming down and nature is coming back.

Best of all, the month of April, while bringing few to no showers, does bring an opportunity to create beautiful May flowers. No, not those planted in the ground, but those painted on canvas.

The Sanibel Captiva Art League offers 'paint-outs' all year long. So wanna be, aspiring and even seasoned artists can join together and paint outdoors, creating flowers or the scenes before them. Every Thursday throughout the season starting at 9AM -the group meets to 'paint out' and has lunch at different locations on the island with a brown bag lunch each painter brings with them. According to the group, visitors are most welcome. Car pooling is encouraged due to limited parking spaces in many of the locations.

Art Singapore-what is that?

Art Singapore is an event that is being held in Singapore somewhere in the month of October ever since 2007 and is billed as the event to be in if you are dabbling with anything is related to art.

But seriously, when compared with art shows else where; art Singapore is really just an art show that is being held in Singapore. My first thought about art Singapore is that it should focus on Singapore art and if Singapore is too small, perhaps art in South East Asia.

That is not the case. It is simply a trade show that brings with it many vendors that are trying to sell their art works and other various pieces of art. I guess this is not unique to art Singapore but seriously, doing so loses the meaning of art.

I guess Art Hong Kong and art shows in various other places faces the same problem of becoming a 'investment' rather than a art appreciation venue, but the situation is really obvious in Singapore.

It is understandable that artist and the various galleries needed more than praises and compliments to survive but hosting art investment talks certainly isn't the way an event billed as Art Singapore should be!

In fact, if one would to enter the exhibition, they would be surprised that why this event is even called art Singapore in the first place -there are hardly any Singapore art pieces being exhibited! Maybe it would be good if they can dedicate one area that showcases our local artist?

However, no matter how crass this art Singapore is, you must really give credit to the organizer, they have successfully put Singapore on the art scene map. At least now, art lovers around the world know that Singapore has a Art Singapore, an exhibition where they can come to peddle their wares.

The organizer has also in my personal view done more than the Singapore Art authority in pushing art. The authorities not only have been slow in pushing any initiatives, they are also slow in whatever art shows that they are trying to organize.

Thus far, I simply cannot remember any art shows or exhibitions organized by the local art authorities such as Singapore Art museum. But these husband and wife pair, just their effort has help folks around the world know Singapore art or at least Singapore being a place that loves art.

To sum up, Singapore art is an exhibition that probably makes a lot of money both for the organizer and the vendors. Personally, I do not think it is really an exhibition but more skew towards art selling or investment trade show. But, it has really put Singapore on the world map where art is concerned.

Pick Your Paint Brushes

The brush you choose to use on your project can depend on a what you are painting and the look your are trying to achieve. Also, do not forgot that you want to consider the size of the brush you are most comfortable with. The size that works well for me, may not be what is best for you. Most importantly, choose your brushes based on the project you will be working on and what fits your comfort level. This will enable you to create a lovely work of art.

You might be asking yourself, what brush should I use if I were painting lilacs, wisteria, or wanting to add texture to my shading? That's right, the Scruffy Brush would be your brush of choice! It is also a great brush when you are painting fur and doing faux finishes. This brush is dampen prior to using it. You should gently twist the bristles around so you create an oval shape, and then you are ready to dip in to your paint and let the pouncing begin! Clean up consists of pounce the bristles and not racking them. Racking may cause the bristles to break off. You can pounce the brush in a paper towel after cleaning, to ensure all of the paint has been removed. Allow this brush to dry before using it again.

The Flat Brush is probably one of the most common brushes used, especially for those who do the One Stroke Technique. This brush has longer bristles and less thickness in the body if you are using the One Stroke Brushes. It has a sharp chisel edge. Many strokes will begin and end on the chisel part, so it is important for your brush to have a nice edge. Your designs will be so much crisper and cleaner if they are.

To begin painting with a flat brush just dampen the bristles and dry off with a paper towel. You may now begin. You ready to load your brush. Remember, if you are doing the One Stroke Technique it is very important to load your brush so it is two thirds of the way full. The more paint on your brush, the better the flow will be. When you are finished, just gently rack your brush back in forth in your caddy to remove the paint.

Script Liners liners are great for adding ribbons, curlicues, and smaller detail to your painted pieces. Often these are used with more of an inky or thinned consistency paint. Clean the liners as you would the flat brushes.

Believe it or not, it is possible to paint a beautiful piece of art using just one type and size of a brush. There are many more to select from than what is mentioned here. These are just a few, which seem to be good ones to start off with. You are the artist so choose what works best for you!

Why, How, and Where You Should Sign Your Painting

One thing that gives pleasure to an artist is completing a painting. Sometimes this is because he or she feels satisfied and that the work is complete, and other times it is because they may be tired of working on it and want to move on. Either way, artists should always sign their work. It is not a requirement that paintings be signed, but the question is - Why would you not sign? If the work is good enough in your opinion to be given or sold, then take credit and let the world know you created it.

How you sign a painting is totally up to you. When I sign my work, I use my three initials. The reason that I do this is because my name is slightly long and I don't want to plaster the work with my name. If you want to use your full name you could use a marker pen and write small if you are concerned about this. You should try to stick with the same type of signature for all of your work so that as people start to recognize your work they also recognize your signature. So decide if you will use a full name, first or last name, nick name, pen name or initials and claim your fame! As mentioned, you could use a marker pen to sign or simply use whatever medium your painting is to sign. It is always a wise decision to include your full name and contact information on the back of the painting as well.

As far as color, I choose to use a somewhat neutral color to sign my work. For example, if I am doing a scene with a hay field in the foreground and there are earth tone colored grass in my work, I might use that color or a variation for the signature. This way the signature blends in without being hidden. Don't ever be afraid to let the signature be seen without overpowering the painting.

Where you sign your paintings is also up to you. Traditionally a signature is put towards one of the bottom corners. The signature should flow as part of the painting and not detract from it. I have seen portrait artists' sign quite boldly, partially on the face or body of the piece. My opinion is that if I were the customer, I wouldn't like the signature to be there. The signature should be towards the bottom, but not too far down so that framing or matting hides it.

Signing your work is a simple thing, but you should be consistent and careful in how and where you sign.

How to Paint a Realistic Landscape by Layering

Understanding background, middleground and foreground in a painting is key to realism in landscapes. Using the three correctly creates depth which is one of the most important parts of creating a successful landscape painting. Paintings without depth are flat and boring.

Another term used to represent back, middle and foreground is layering. The artist should plan what subjects will be in the painting. By subjects I mean anything, sky, trees, hills, mountains, etc. When you layer you simply put one item in front of another.
Lets start in the background. If your painting has a sky, this will be the first thing painted. I usually start by wetting the sky with white gesso. Add whatever color you are using to the top and blend downward. This will create a lighter color near the horizon giving the illusion of depth. The next layer in the background should not be of much detail either. Mountains, for example should be a color just a little darker than the sky. The further away you want them to appear will determine how much detail you give them. You could add more layers of mountains with peaks overlapping for more depth. Each mountain or layer that you add will be slightly darker that the previous.

A good example of middle ground layering using the same example could be by adding a middle ground row of bushes and trees. Again, use a color slightly darker that the closest mountain. Paint in the trees, bushes or fields. Paint in a few tall trees that extend up in front of some of the mountains. This will make the mountains or background really look like they are in the distance.

The foreground layer of the painting will contain the most detail and should be the darkest or most vivid in color. I usually add an eye stopper on both sides in the foreground of my paintings. An eye stopper is simply a bush or tree or something that keeps the eye from wanting to go off the painting. It keeps the viewers attention in the painting. Items in the foreground will contain the most detail. For example, if you have some leaves on trees that are to appear very close, you might add a few simple lines in the leaves to appear like veins or a tiny rain drop ready to drip.

Remembering and using these layering techniques will make your paintings appear more realistic and appear to have depth. It is a simple concept that should add life to your landscape painting.

The Top Ten Things You Should Know About Acrylic Painting

You should know these top ten things about painting with acrylic paints. Knowing them will save you time, money and even your sanity.

1. Buy good quality brushes. You may find yourself struggling with cheap brushes. Quality brushes also hold up better when stored for periods of time in water.

2. Remember that acrylic paints dry very quickly. In my opinion this is an advantage to the art making process but a disadvantage if your tubes of paint start to dry out. Always replace the tops on the tubes of paint. You should also keep a mister handy to keep your paint in the palette moist.

3. Acrylic paint is water based, which means that the brushes can be cleaned using water and soap. Regular soap can be used but I recommend purchasing soap made specifically for brush cleaning. You should get into the habit of cleaning your brushes between projects. Don't let them soak in water for days at a time.

4. Do not let the paint dry on the brush. I have rescued a brush or two after this has happened, but it was not easy. Get in the habit of rinsing brushes as you paint then store them in a shallow tray of water on the side to avoid damaging bristles.

5. Buy a plastic palette keeper. A palette keeper keeps the paints damp and stops them from drying out. It is kind of like Tupperware for your paint. When you are done painting for a session, simply mist everything and replace the top. When working on small projects I have also used paper plates for the paint, and stored them in large zip lock bags.

6. Get into the habit of placing the color in the same position on the palette every time you paint. After awhile, you will develop instinctive habits of where your colors are.

7. Do not use acrylic paints over oil paints. You have heard the term oil and water don't mix. Well, water based acrylics don't adhere to oil based paints. The acrylic paint will not stick to the oil based surface.

8. One of the things I love about acrylics is that they are versatile. Using thin coats of acrylic paint give a watercolor look to a painting. Simply add water to acrylic paint and you have watercolor paints.

9. Applying acrylic paints thickly will give the painting a surface texture as in an oil painting look. Applying paint thickly in the foreground of a painting for texture gives depth to the finished painting.

10. You can purchase a variety of acrylic mediums to gain different effects. A glaze medium helps to produce a watercolor effect. Gel mediums and texture. Paste mediums add extra body to the paint and make your painting come to life.
